What is Asbestos?
Before 1985, many houses were constructed using plaster mixed with asbestos. This practice was widespread from the late 19th century until the arrival of gypsum panels (commonly called drywall or gypsum board).
In this article by Yves Frenette, an environmental hygienist and lecturer at the Department of Environmental Health and Occupational Health at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Montreal, he explains:
“Drywall appeared in the late 60s… Previously, most plaster walls contained asbestos.”
If you are undertaking renovation work in a house or apartment building built before 1985, it is essential, for your health and the health of workers on your site, to conduct tests before starting work to ensure that materials do not contain asbestos.
Health Problems Related to Asbestos
Among the health problems that can be caused by prolonged exposure to asbestos are lung cancer, asbestosis, and mesothelioma. These diseases are related to respiratory disorders and are generally fatal. Did you like this service? Read also about Mold Decontamination.
Reducing the Risks of Asbestos Exposure
Following Health Canada’s recommendations for asbestos decontamination, you can reduce your risk of asbestos exposure by hiring a certified asbestos decontamination professional who will conduct an asbestos analysis before you undertake:
- Renovations or rearrangements
- Demolitions
- Additions to your home
If asbestos is detected, hire a qualified asbestos removal specialist to dispose of it before starting your work. Avoid moving asbestos-containing materials yourself, as it will increase the health risks for you and your family. Contact the workplace safety authorities in your province or territory to find out the qualifications or certifications required in your area. Asbestos abatement – Wikipedia
