What is asbestos?

Before 1985, many houses were built using plaster mixed with asbestos. This practice was very common, from the end of the 19th century until drywall becomes more popular. (commonly called plasterboard or gyproc)

In an article, Yves Frenette environmental hygienist and lecturer in the department of environmental and occupational health at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Montreal, explains:

Plasterboard appeared at the end of the 1960s ...
Previously, most plaster walls contained asbestos.

If you are planning on remodeling your house or apartment building that was built before 1985, for your health and the workers on your site, have tests carried out before starting any type of the work to verify that the materials do not contain asbestos.

Asbestos-related health problems

Among the health problems that can be caused by long exposure to asbestos are: lung cancer, asbestosis, and mesothelioma. These three diseases are linked to respiratory disorders and are usually fatal.

Reduce the risk of exposure to asbestos

Following Health Canada's recommendations for asbestos decontamination, you can reduce your risk of exposure to asbestos by hiring ASP certified decontamination professionals who will come take samples of different parts of the house suspected to contain asbestos and proceed to an analysis.

Make sure to call a specialist in this matter before you undertake:

  • renovation or remodeling
  • demolition
  • addition or extension of your house

If asbestos is found, hire a qualified asbestos removal specialist to make sure it is removed and decontaminated correctly before starting your house project. Avoid moving materials containing asbestos yourself because it can impact the health of the people living in the house. Contact the workplace safety authorities in your province or territory to find out what qualifications and certifications are required for asbestos remediation in your area.
